Is Arutas is a beach located in the province of Oristano and is part of the municipality of Cabras.
Together with the twin beaches of Mari Ermi and Maimoni it represents one of the most popular destinations for tourists during the summer period, precisely because of the particularity of the beach, which is composed of colorful quartz grains with different colors ranging from white to pink to green.
Their particular beach is thought to derive from the erosion, which occurred over hundreds of millions of years, of the island of Malu Entu which was once a mountain when the sea level was lower than it is today.
This particularity of the three beaches has unfortunately meant that over the years their sand was plundered, becoming increasingly poorer of their quartz grains every year, for this reason it is now forbidden to take away the sand and heavy fines are foreseen for those who are found in possession.
The beach of Is Arutas, bordered between two rocky spurs (Punta is Arutas to the south and Bardoni to the north) extends for about 500 metres and its expanse of quartz meets a limpid sea with colors ranging from the blue of the shore to the intense green of the deepest waters.
The sea is characterized by a bottom that develops downhill, so the water becomes high starting from a few meters from the shore.
Furthermore, Is Arutas is a beach very exposed to winds, so in the event of a mistral the sea becomes very rough, which makes it unsuitable for families with children.
This corner of Sardinia is very wild and little built, and there are few services offered on the beach.
Is Arutas is a unique beach of its kind not only for the particularity of its beach, but also for the history of the territory in which it is located, there are in fact several testimonies of a past rich in history.
In the countryside behind the beach, there are, in fact, the remains of nuraghi and ancient sandstone quarries dating back to the Roman period, from which Is Arutas most likely takes its name which means “the caves“, testimonies that tell us of a territory in antiquity thriving and rich in resources which then became uninhabited.
Is Arutas is an authentic pearl on the Sinis peninsula.
Thanks to its characteristics it is possible to visit it both in summer to enjoy its particular beach and be able to immerse yourself in its clear waters, and during the rest of the year, when it is possible to enjoy the best of its wild nature and go in search of the testimonies of the past, among the remains of the sandstone quarries and nuragic stones or pebbles that can be seen among the vegetation of the surrounding countryside.
